Chestnut Tree in the village hall grounds

The works to remove the diseased tree in the village hall grounds will take place on 18 th/19 th May.

During a recent survey, it was noted that the fruiting bodies of the fungus Rigidoporus ulmarius were present near the base. This is a perennial bracket fungus which causes a brown cubical rot and extensive decay, often leading to stem fracture.

Also present were a number of decay cavities which were also inspected and strength loss calculations were carried out. A number of these cavities were over the threshold where trees have been known to fail and several of them were very close to this threshold.

The option of reducing the size of the tree was investigated however due to the location of the defects and the stress this pruning would put the tree it was deemed not a viable option so the only realistic option in view of the safety of the village hall and adjacent road users, was to remove this tree.

Needle Felting workshops at Dorset Falconry Park

Needle Felting (or Dry Felting) is easy to learn and it’s surprisingly quick to complete projects. It involves a stabbing technique to sculpt wool into forms – it’s amazing what can be achieved!

In these workshops, you will learn how wool from different sheep breeds can be used to make shapes, provide colour and give texture, all from using a thin barbed needle and your imagination.

All materials are provided for you, and you will take away a basic kit of needles and a sponge pad, so you can start your next project quickly – it’s an infectious hobby!
